I know it seems a sudden transition from cheerful to sad/serious… but that’s just how Zemi is personality-wise. I don’t think he knows how to cushion his pain in any other way but to try and laugh about things.
As for setting this story up in the FFIV time-line (for those who know the other stories as points of reference), Shimmer picks up about 24 years before the present day storylines in Wayrift.
KluYa has just been defeated by Zemus, his soul has been sealed away on top of Mt. Ordeals. Cecil has just been orphaned in the city of Baron. Golbez has just been stolen by the dark forces and taken to the Tower of Zot.
Due to previous circumstances, Zemi is unable to manifest on the Blue Planet to stop Zeromus from playing out this destruction. And Zemi only has one servant left…
